  • A Multi-Disciplinary Approach to AAC Implementation

    course-thumbnail

Type: Live in-person & online ASHA

    CEUs: 0.10

The successful implementation of an AAC device depends on the skills of the AAC user, as well as the skills of all communication partners in the environment.  The speech-language pathologist (SLP) is a crucial communication partner; however, many AAC users often receive physical therapy (PT) and/or occupational therapy (OT), in addition.  The focus of this session is on implementing an AAC device for a multi-disciplinary team, including PTs and OTs.  This session provides an overview of core language, the importance of communication partners, and how to implement a device.  SLPs may implement many of these strategies, as well, and assist members of the team in implementing an AAC device with ideas, suggestions, and further support.  Implementation strategies discussed include aided language input, using sabotage to elicit communication, establishing routines, and using scripts.  Participants will have the opportunity to put it to practice through hands-on activities.

Devices are not required for this training.

    Learner Outcomes:

    1. define and describe core language.

  • AAC: Ready-Set-GOAL! Part 1

    course-thumbnail

Type: Live in-person & online ASHA

    CEUs: 0.10

Creating goals and measuring progress for individuals who use AAC can be a challenging process for a variety of reasons, including subtle growth, environmental and communication partner considerations, and differences in language growth for individuals who use AAC. While there are available goal banks to use, these still require tweaking and may not always be appropriate for individual clients.

This course will provide participants with a goal writing framework, assessment tools, and resources so they have the skills to write meaningful goals for clients who use AAC. Participants will engage in goal writing in order to learn about the goal attainment scale, assessment with AAC considerations, and the linguistic and operational communicative competence. This course will help participants reflect on where their client is (baseline), where they want to go (goals), and how to get there (a plan).

    Learner Outcomes:

    1. Identify the three important components used in the provided AAC Goal Framework.
    2. Define linguistic communicative competence for AAC use.
    3. Define operational communicative competence for AAC use.
    4. Write one goal, with at least 2 objectives, using the framework provided.

  • AAC: Ready-Set-GOAL! Part 2

    course-thumbnail

Type: Live in-person & online ASHA

    CEUs: 0.10

This course follows AAC: Ready – Set – GOAL! Part One. In Part Two, we will continue to address the unique challenges of writing goals for individuals who use AAC, including differences in language acquisition, environmental considerations, and communication partner considerations. Rather than reviewing a bank of goals, in this course, we will continue to use the goal attainment scale and SMART terminology as a framework for writing meaningful goals.

This course will pick up with covering the communicative competences for AAC, taking an in depth look at social and strategic communicative competencies. Participants will engage in goal writing in order to learn SMART terminology. We will discuss monitoring progress, as a goal is only as good as your ability to measure it. This course will help participants reflect on where their client is (baseline), where they want to go (goals), and how to get there (a plan).

It is necessary for participants to take Part One prior to taking Part Two for understanding.

    Learner Outcomes:

    1. identify the three important components used in the provided AAC Goal Framework.
    2. list the four areas of communicative competence for AAC use.
    3. identify resources to support writing goals and monitoring progress.
    4. define social and strategic communicative competence for AAC use.
    5. describe elements that make a “SMART” goal.

    Agenda:

30 minutes - Review of remaining two communicative competencies, with discussion of available resources and practice writing objectives for each area

10 minutes - Fine tuning with SMART

    15 minutes - Monitoring progress

    5 minutes - Wrap up

  • AAC: Ready, Set, Goal! 90 minutes

    course-thumbnail

    Type: Live Online ASHA

    CEUs: 0.15

Creating goals and measuring progress for individuals who use AAC can be a challenging process. In theory, this shouldn’t be that much harder than writing any other language or academic goals, right? One thing that is often different about the AAC goal-writing process is that teachers and therapists simply don’t know enough about AAC and what skills contribute to helping someone become a competent and successful communicator. While there are available goal banks to use, these still require tweaking and may not always be appropriate.

This course will provide the participants with resources, tools, and a framework so they have the skills to write goals and objectives on their own. Participants will engage in goal writing in order to learn about the four areas of communicative competence, the goal attainment scale, and SMART terminology. This course will help participants reflect on where their client is (baseline), where they want to go (goals), and how to get there (a plan).

    Learner Outcomes

    1. identify the three important components used in the provided AAC Goal Framework.
    2. list the four areas of communicative competence for AAC use.
    3. identify resources to support writing goals.
    4. write one goal, with at least 2 objectives, using the framework provided.
    5. describe elements that make a “SMART” goal.

    Agenda

5 minutes - Introduction; Setting the stage

15 minutes - Explaining the AAC Goal Framework

5 minutes - Introduce Case Study

50 minutes - Review of four of the communicative competencies, with discussion of available resources and practice writing  objectives for each area

10 minutes - Fine tuning with SMART

    5 minutes - Wrap up
